Course Application

An application form must be filled out for each student attending either a regular course or classes through the MBU.


Forms must be submitted to NSFS thirty (30) days prior to the start date of the course. 


IMPORTANT!!! Cancellations must be submitted to NSFS prior to fourteen (14) days of the course start date (preferably in writing) - unexcused absences will still be charged in full for course and accommodations if applicable.


INCOMPLETE FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.


All students under the age of 18 require a legal guardian's consent and a department chaperone. 

Please submit the Parental Permission Registration Form for Junior Firefighters found below along with the Course Application.

Host a Firefighter Training Class

Are you looking to host a training class in your community? Partnering with the Nova Scotia Firefighters School (NSFS) is a great way to provide professional, certified training to firefighters in your area. We offer a wide range of courses designed to enhance safety, skills, and effectiveness for firefighters at every level of experience.

Requirements for Hosting a Class

To ensure a successful training session, here are the basic requirements for hosting a course:

  1. Training Venue: A suitable classroom space for theory-based lessons and, where applicable, access to training grounds for hands-on exercises.
  2. Equipment: Any specific tools or gear needed for practical sessions (we can provide a detailed list depending on the course).
  3. Participant Minimum: Most courses require a minimum number of participants to run effectively. Contact us for specifics.
  4. Scheduling: Work with NSFS to select dates that fit your department’s availability and align with our instructors’ schedules.
  5. Compliance: All training activities must adhere to Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations.

Online & Distance Class Requirements

Registration:

All students must check their email regularly (including junk mail and spam folders) for correspondence from the NSFS on course dates. All confirmations of registration and directions will come via email. If you have checked your email and have not received anything 3 business days prior to course start, please email info@fireschool.ca 

Google Classroom:

(Instructions will be emailed to you)

  • All students are required to follow the directions on their instructional email and enroll in the Google Classroom for their course. 
  • All login information and course announcements will be posted using the Google Classroom. 
  • Any student not enrolled in the Google Classroom will not receive login information. 
  • Any assignments or tests in the Google Classroom are to be completed by their assigned due date. (Instructors will advise on assignment/test detials)
  • No certificates will be issued to those who fail to complete assignements/tests. 

*Any student who possesses a valid excuse about lack of completed assignements must make arrangements with their course Instructors. 

Attendance:

(Class schedules vary in length and frequency) 

  • All students wishing to sign up for any distance learning classes must be willing to commit to all scheduled online classes (if applicable) 
  • Students completing self-paced programs will be exempt from non-mandatory Q&A sessions if they choose.
  • Any absence from a scheduled Zoom/Google Meet class without prior instructor knowledge will result in an unexcused absence. Excused absences are not to for prior work commitments but urgent requirements preventing you from attending. I.e. Fire call, unexpected home emergency, etc. 

*Nova Scotia Volunteer Fire Departments may be billed full course fees and textbook costs if a member of their department fails to attend a course without being excused. 

Computer System Requirements for Online Learning:

Internet

Students must have access to a computer that has a reliable Internet connection and Web access for the duration of your course. Students can access their account using WiFi , however, high speed is recommended for the ideal learning experience. Most 56K dial-up connections and cable or DLS connections will work, but they may be very slow

MAC or PC

A Macintosh or PC system with these minimum requirements:
PC: Pentium III 600 MHz processor or faster, 256 MB RAM or greater (512 MB or greater recommended), Windows XP/ Vista/ Win7 or newer.
MAC: Intel X86 based processor, 512 MB RAM or greater (1GB recommended), Mac OS-X 10.5 (Leopard) or 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Web Browser

A graphical browser such as Internet Explorer (version 9.0 or higher) a recent Mozilla Firefox) of Google Chrome is required. In some instances, it may be necessary for some users to upgrade their Web browser programs.

Email

Students will require an Email account to register for any NSFS program; this will be the Email account used to contact online learners.
